Volcano Day

Third graders get to have a special volcano day.  It is optional, but if you would like to create a volcano then you can and they all go outside and explode them together.

Well Chris and Ladybug were very excited to embark on this adventure.

First on the agenda was to figure out how to make it explode high into the air.  They ended up using two squirt bottles.  They put the baking soda in one and the vinegar in the other and then attached them with a hose so that when the vinegar was squirted into the baking soda bottle the pressure would force it up.
More testing.  How much to put in.
Time to make our frame.   Using hot glue to put it together.
They used popsicle sticks as the form of the volcano and then paper mache to form the volcano.  Ladybug pasted while daddy put them on.

 Very serious business.
I forgot to get picture but Ladybug painted the whole thing by herself.  She mixed brown and black to get the color of brown she wanted on the bottom.  And wanted black at the top from where it was burnt and then she wanted to splatter red for the red lava.

Then they went and picked leaves and sticks from the yard and created trees with hot glue.

 Beautiful volcano.

The day of the event was beautiful.  The class sat in a circle.  Parents came to watch and they one by one exploded their volcanos.

And it did shoot right up in the air.
Happy daddy and girl.  Very fun time.  Please note mommy only took part in this project solely as the photographer.  I left it totally up to them and loved it!
